Extreme weather events like the June 2021 heat wave in Portland, where the city experienced three consecutive days above 105 degrees, are making it harder for utilities to estimate electricity demand and supply based on seasonal patterns. This, combined with the shift to less-predictable clean energy, challenges system reliability. Principal Dr. Ahmad Faruqui will join the “Meeting Oregon’s Energy Demand: Lessons from California and the Northwest” panel at 1:30 p.m. (PT) | 4:30 p.m. (ET) to discuss how Oregon should handle peak electricity demands and ensure reliable electricity, looking at how California responded to their own region-wide heat wave in August 2020.
